Series overview
About the series
In a mountain town where people vanish every winter, one man decides who gets found. Soren Ostby came to Widow’s Reach to run its searches and to live beside a secret: years ago, at sea, he let a drowning man go. Now that man’s sister flies his helicopter. In every case the town lies to him: families, friends, even his own volunteers, all bending the search toward the person they want saved. He can’t arrest anyone. All he can do is choose. And every choice brings back the one he couldn’t make.
Maren runs search and rescue for the county around Widow’s Reach, Washington: glacier peaks, flooding canyons, desert and caves, one small town, and never enough of anything. One helicopter. One weather window. One night before the cold wins. She can’t arrest anyone, and the sheriff has the final word. All she can do is the math on who is still alive, and decide where the last flight goes. And in every search, someone she knows is lying to change her numbers.
…one line per book…
They plant clues, fake illnesses, sell their grief on camera and turn her own volunteers against her. They are her neighbors. Every one of them can explain why.
Every time Maren picks one, the whole town remembers the one she didn’t.
