The Donor
Book Two
“Six days to give her mother most of her liver. Everyone she loves is helping her say yes.”
On her first case as donor advocate, Teresa Nowicki watches Leah Ortega trace the cut line across her belly with the cap of a pen until her breath catches. Told that about one donor in two hundred does not survive, Leah laughs. Then she signs, turns the form face down, and asks the question it leaves out: “If I say yes because I am afraid to say no, is it still my consent?” Teresa has six days to find out.
Leah’s dying mother, Rosario, tells Teresa kindly, “If she cries with you, it isn’t a no.” The pressure follows Leah home. Arturo, Rosario’s partner, owns the building and lives below her. Then her key won’t turn. He has changed the lock, keeping the spare “for emergencies.” When he goes down, the television under her floor goes off and stays off. Arturo is listening.
Teresa must choose: clear a yes she doubts and bet Leah’s life, or help Leah back out and take the family’s blame. By Wednesday morning, the choice is Leah’s. But everyone she loves has already made it for her.
An unnerving psychological thriller about consent, family pressure that sounds like love, and a daughter who may not be free to say no.
